Geography

The Island of Eryetia is located just off the western coast of Melarna. It is a large island (about 1000 miles long, and a little over 100 miles wide for most of its length). The island is a rugged land, currently separated into several city-states, small kingdoms, and regions.

History

Eryetia had been a united kindgom which plied the seas. Trading ships braved the N'Tethas islands and traded with Malazhi at its height. When Ossav's armies reached the western edge of Melarna, he sent brutal raids of goblinoids across the sea to raid Eryetia. The Eryetian navy responded by destroying a number of strongholds (even as far as Velton and Seafield). But Eryetia did not have the strength to resist Ossav, and after 90 years of continuous raiding, Eryetia fell in 683.

Ossav appointed the family of Hatcyles to govern the island, and gave the land to the goblinoids. Humans lived in fear, and were subject to brutal treatment from both the goblins and their own rulers. The Hatcyles family maintained an iron-fisted control over the island kingdom far after Ossav himself fell.

When the elves returned to Theluran, they realized that a hostile, united Eryetia would pose a grave threat to their attempts to reclaim Theluran. They sent assassins to eliminate the Hatcyles family, and ultimately succeeded in breaking the Hatcyles family's power over the island in 2694. While the goblinoids were too numerous to eliminate completely, the threat of a united naval power was eliminated. (sponsored a priesthood? Need to figure how second level of command was eliminated)

The elves took control of the southern tip of Eryetia. Over the next few centuries, the goblins were slowly driven back not by elves, but by human warlords seeking to claim territory for them selves. A number of territories were founded, destroyed, fought against one another, and slowly reclaimed the land. Dalyria conquered the northern region of the island in 3827. Other kingdoms little larger than city-states arose to control the rest of the island.

Peoples

Regions

Eryetia is divided into several small independent nations and strongholds, as well as territories belonging to other nations.

Cyndos was founded in YYY3, by humans fleeing the orcs of Krazok. When the orcs fortified Krazok, most of the humans fled. The elves helped them cross the sea to Eryetia, and claim a new land as their own. Some residents of Cyndos resent the elves though, blaming them for the orcs taking over their land.

Gheldur was founded by NNN, allied with the dwarves of DDDD. The dwarves wanted to an alliance with humans, as a buffer against the goblins (and the elves of Theluran). They taught some of the original Eryetians their techniques of mining and forging.

Konar was founded by an Askmath Jarl who had disgraced himself in an argument with the Askmath Koniger. He led followers to the coast of Eryetia. His forces, augmented by disaffected Proguri, claimed one of the more fertile areas of Eryetia, wresting it from both the goblins and Progur.

Progur was a city-state founded by one of the Hatcyles family's lieutennants. When the Hatcyles family fell, Tahr Cylostur used his army to control the city of Progur, and promised to use the military strength to prevent the goblinoids from destroying the city. Establishing a series of defense keeps throughout the land and requiring every man to have some weapons training has turned Progur into a strong city-state. They have allied with elves against goblinkind, but never for very long; little trust exists between Progur and Theluran.

Ukpyr is the most recent of the city-states. Founded around ... Note: Ukpyr was the creation of Ted Mallo, who started a campaign in the small kingdom. I adopted the kingdom and background for my own campaign world
