Balmondil
Balmondil is a walled city, with watch towers. The gates
are typically kept open until dark. The city is in the foothills of the
mountain range, and has several towns and villages nearby.
The pass into the mountains runs near a village called Dargen, near
Balmondil. Dargen, which was the site of recent battles between goblinoids and
dwarves. Dargen is in the foothills of the Emperor's Mountains.
History
Balmondil's present history dates back to the days following the fall of the
Yarbalis empire.
People
The population of Balmondil is 32000 year around, with some increase in
the fall (harvests). Balmondil is near several different cultures, so in
general people here are more tolerant. There are not very many other large
cities anywhere near Balmondil, so it is a melting pot.
Balmondil's population is mostly human, but includes a number of hill
dwarves and a group of grey elves (who built the original buildings and
the "old-town"). A few hobgoblins have lived within the city in earlier
times, but they had recently left (about a year ago). Gnomes are uncommon,
halflings even more so. There are a few oriental humans as well as a number
of nomadic Vei horsemen who entered the city for the novelty of it.
Rulership
While the Lord-Mayor deals with the day-to-day operations of the city,
several different groups control various operations, either covertly or
overtly with the mayor's consent.

Economy
Balmondil lies at the southwest end of the trade route thru the Emperor's Mountains
to NNNN.

Nearby Villages
Dargen is a nearby village, nestled in the foothills of the Emperor's
Mountains. Dargen has been a site of a few recent battles with humanoids;
it is the closest human settlement to Borov-Urdak, and has a fair number
of dwarves. One hill dwarf, named Brahgen, runs the Hammer and Helm tavern.

Mages' Schools
Balmondil is home to a fairly large academy of magic, which also caters
to specialty mages. The school and library are fairly good, as some information
from the "orient" has trickled here. The library is not commonly available
without a good reason - its a closed-door academy.
